Question 1

How long does the battery really last, and is the drain a common issue?

Accepted Answer

Based on real-world usage, battery life varies significantly. While official estimates are longer, many users report changing the 4 AA batteries every 2-4 months, depending on usage frequency and Wi-Fi connectivity strength. Using high-quality lithium batteries can improve performance. It's a good idea to keep a spare set on hand.

Question 2

I live outside the United States. Will all the smart features work for me?

Accepted Answer

This is a crucial point for international buyers. Due to regional software restrictions, key features like Auto-Lock and advanced guest access controls are often unavailable in the app for users in Canada, the UK, Europe, and Australia. We recommend checking the August website for your specific region's feature list before purchasing.

Question 3

Is the installation truly DIY-friendly, and what's the hardest part?

Accepted Answer

Yes, most users with standard deadbolts find the physical installation straightforward with the included guide. The most common hiccup is setting up the Wi-Fi module, which some find finicky. Ensuring your phone is on a 2.4GHz network (not 5GHz) and that your router signal is strong at your door is the key to a smooth setup.

Question 4

Who is this lock best suited for, and who might want to look elsewhere?

Accepted Answer

This lock is ideal for tech-friendly users in the August ecosystem who value flexible keypad and app access for family or guests and don't mind periodic battery maintenance. If you need robust, uninterrupted Wi-Fi connectivity, require all advanced features outside the US, or want a truly "set-and-forget" lock with less frequent battery changes, you may want to explore alternatives like the Schlage Encode.

Question 5

What happens if the Wi-Fi disconnects or the battery dies completely?

Accepted Answer

Don't worry, you won't be locked out! The keypad will continue to work on its own internal battery reserve. If both the main and keypad batteries die, you can use the traditional physical key that came with your original deadbolt. The lock also includes two non-connected backup keys for emergency keyhole access.
