Question 1

Is the installation really a DIY project, or will I need professional help?

Accepted Answer

Overwhelmingly, reviewers found installation to be a straightforward DIY task. Most report completing it in 15-30 minutes using just a screwdriver. It's designed to fit over your existing single-cylinder deadbolt, so no locksmith is typically required. The included guide and video tutorials are frequently praised for being clear and easy to follow.

Question 2

I live outside the United States. Are there any features I won't have access to?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this is a critical point for international buyers. Certain advanced features, like integration with Apple's HomeKit Secure Video, are currently restricted to the US due to regional certification and server requirements. We recommend checking the official August website for the most up-to-date feature availability in your specific country before purchasing.

Question 3

How reliable is the Wi-Fi connectivity and the accompanying app?

Accepted Answer

Experiences vary. Many users enjoy seamless remote access, but a common complaint on tech forums involves the lock occasionally disconnecting from Wi-Fi or the app becoming unresponsive, sometimes requiring a battery pull to reset. For the most stable experience, ensure your Wi-Fi router has a strong signal at your door. Some Reddit users suggest using a smart home hub (like an August Connect) for a more reliable connection than direct Wi-Fi.

Question 4

What's the real-world battery life like, and is the keypad easy to use in the dark?

Accepted Answer

While advertised for up to a year, actual battery life depends heavily on usage. Users with frequent lock/unlock cycles or Wi-Fi connectivity issues often report changing the 4 AA batteries every 4-6 months. The keypad is touch-sensitive (not mechanical) and is not backlit, which some find tricky to use in low light. A common TikTok tip is to add a small, battery-powered motion-sensor light above the door for nighttime use.

Question 5

Who is this lock best suited for, and who might want to consider an alternative?

Accepted Answer

This lock is ideal for tech-savvy users who prioritize a clean look, easy installation, and the core convenience of keyless entry and remote access. It's great for managing access for family or service people. However, if your top priority is absolute reliability and "set-it-and-forget-it" operation, or if you require full feature access outside the US, you might consider alternatives like the Schlage Encode. Users deeply invested in the Apple ecosystem sometimes prefer a native HomeKit lock for smoother integration.
