Question 1

Are these shims truly "heavy-duty" enough for leveling appliances like a washing machine or toilet?

Accepted Answer

Based on user feedback, these shims are best for light to medium-duty applications. For wobbly furniture, doors, or sheds, they work well. However, for permanently supporting the full weight of major appliances, some users have found them prone to cracking. For heavy, concentrated loads, dedicated appliance shims or traditional wooden shims are often recommended for their superior compression strength.

Question 2

What's the actual size breakdown in the 42-pack?

Accepted Answer

The pack contains a variety of five graduated sizes to handle different gaps. You'll receive multiple pieces of each size, with a greater quantity of the smaller wedges (ideal for fine adjustments) and fewer of the largest ones. If your project primarily requires thicker shims, you may want to check the product dimensions carefully or consider that a single, longer wooden shim might be more cost-effective.

Question 3

How easy are they to customize, and what's the best way to cut them?

Accepted Answer

They are designed to be user-friendly. You can easily snap them by hand along the scored lines for a rough fit. For a precise, clean cut, many TikTok and YouTube DIYers suggest using a sharp utility knife or a pair of heavy-duty scissors. A common tip is to trim them slightly smaller than your gap, as some users note they can be a tight fit.

Question 4

I've heard wooden shims are cheaper. What's the advantage of this plastic set?

Accepted Answer

Great question! The key advantages are convenience and material suitability. This set provides an immediate range of sizes, is resistant to moisture and rot (perfect for bathrooms under toilets), and is less messy than wood. It's ideal if you have several small jobs or want a clean, pre-cut solution. For a single, large project where you need length and don't mind cutting, a wooden shim from a hardware store may offer better value.

Question 5

Do they compress or crack under pressure over time?

Accepted Answer

As plastic shims, they do not compress like wood can, which provides a stable, long-lasting lift. However, their rigidity means it's important to ensure they are fully supported and not over-tightened, as sudden force on a thin edge can cause cracking—a point noted in some online reviews. For dynamic loads (things that move or vibrate), ensure the shim is well-seated and consider using a full shim rather than just a thin tip.
