Question 1

Is this book suitable for someone who has never played piano before, or do I need some prior experience?

Accepted Answer

This course assumes you're starting from scratch, but it moves at a steady, methodical pace. Many users on Reddit noted that absolute beginners with zero music background succeed—but you’ll need patience and consistent practice. If you’ve never read sheet music, the first few lessons might feel a bit fast. Consider pairing it with free YouTube beginner tutorials for extra support.

Question 2

I’ve heard the binding can break easily. Is that a common issue, and should I be concerned?

Accepted Answer

A small number of users did mention the binding cracking or pages loosening after daily use over several weeks. That said, the vast majority of reviews (4.9 stars) report no problems. If you practice for long sessions or plan to fold the book open flat, some users recommend reinforcing the spine with book tape or looking for a spiral-bound version. For most learners, the standard binding holds up just fine.

Question 3

Does the book include access to online audio, video lessons, or a CD?

Accepted Answer

This edition does not include a CD, audio download, or video access. It is a traditional printed book only. Many TikTok reviewers mentioned wishing for QR-linked play-along tracks. If you want audio support, Alfred offers separate "Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course" CDs or you can find free accompaniment videos on YouTube that follow this book page by page.

Question 4

How long does it typically take an adult to finish Level 1, and what comes next?

Accepted Answer

With 20–30 minutes of daily practice, most adult learners complete Level 1 in about 4 to 6 months. The book covers lesson material, theory, and technique all together, so you progress steadily. After Level 1, the natural next step is Alfred's Basic Adult All-in-One Course Level 2. Many users recommend sticking with the series for consistent skill building.

Question 5

How does this compare to other adult piano methods like Faber Adult Piano Adventures?

Accepted Answer

Both are excellent, but they have different strengths. Alfred's is more traditional and rigorous—great if you want strong classical technique and music theory. Faber's Adult Piano Adventures features more contemporary songs and a slightly more intuitive layout with fewer page turns. A popular Reddit suggestion: if you're determined to learn proper fundamentals, go with Alfred. If you want more modern tunes and a friendlier learning curve, Faber may be a better fit. Either way, many satisfied learners actually use both books side by side.
