Question 1

I only have a 5GHz WiFi network. Will these smart plugs work?

Accepted Answer

No, they require a 2.4GHz WiFi band to function. Many modern routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz under one network name (SSID). During setup, the Kasa app will guide you to temporarily pause your 5GHz band or connect directly to the 2.4GHz signal. If your router doesn't have a 2.4GHz band at all, these plugs won't be compatible.

Question 2

How "mini" are they really? Will they block the second outlet on my wall?

Accepted Answer

While compact, their design can block the adjacent outlet on a standard vertical duplex wall plate. If you need to use both outlets, a short, low-profile extension cord is a popular workaround mentioned by users. For horizontal outlets or power strips with wider spacing, blocking is less of an issue.

Question 3

Can I use these with both Alexa and Google Home, and control them remotely?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. They work with Alexa, Google Home, and the Kasa app itself with no hub required. Once set up on your home WiFi, you can control your plugged-in devices from anywhere using the app on your phone, or via voice commands when you're at home.

Question 4

I see they have energy monitoring. Is it accurate enough to track my electricity costs?

Accepted Answer

The energy monitoring feature is excellent for identifying energy-hungry devices and tracking relative usage trends (e.g., "my old fridge uses way more than the new one"). However, as noted in some detailed reviews, it should be considered a very good estimate rather than a utility-grade measurement for precise billing calculations.

Question 5

I'm building a more advanced smart home. Are these a good starting point, or should I consider a hub-based system?

Accepted Answer

These are a fantastic, low-commitment starting point. Their reliability and ease of use make them perfect for automating lamps, fans, and small appliances. If you foresee wanting dozens of devices, complex automation that works without internet, or direct integration with systems like Apple HomeKit, you might later consider a hub-based system (like Zigbee or Z-Wave). Many users start with Kasa plugs for simplicity and expand from there.
