Question 1

How consistent is the temperature control on this smoker? Will I need extra equipment?

Accepted Answer

Many users on Reddit and YouTube report that the digital display can show a different temperature than the actual internal heat—sometimes by 20–30°F. For best results, owners recommend using a separate oven-safe thermometer or a third-party controller like an Inkbird. The smoker works perfectly for casual cooks, but if you’re chasing competition-level precision, you’ll want an external probe to verify temps.

Question 2

The side wood chip loader sounds handy—does it work reliably?

Accepted Answer

It’s a popular feature for convenience, but TikTok and YouTube reviewers note two common issues: chips can burn up in 30–40 minutes, and larger chunks often jam the feeder. A frequent user hack is to microwave your chips for 60 seconds to remove moisture, which slows down burn rate. The loader is great for short smokes (2–4 hours), but for all-day cooks, expect to reload chips manually every hour.

Question 3

I’ve heard the app has connection problems. How bad is it?

Accepted Answer

The Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity is the most common complaint across social media. The app routinely disconnects every 15–30 minutes, especially if you’re more than 20 feet away or have thick walls. For remote monitoring, many owners end up relying on the smoker’s built-in control panel instead. The app is a nice bonus for checking temps from your couch, but don’t count on it for full unattended cooking.

Question 4

Is this smoker safe to use on a wooden deck or near a house?

Accepted Answer

Yes, many apartment and deck users own this model—but with a strong warning. Reviews frequently mention that the grease tray can overflow or cause flare-ups if not cleaned thoroughly after every use. A few Reddit threads share photos of minor grease fires on decks. The fix is simple: clean the tray, water pan, and drip bucket after each cook. Also, keep the smoker at least 3 feet from any wall or railing. With routine care, it’s safe and reliable.

Question 5

How does this compare to cheaper analog smokers or pricier brands like Traeger?

Accepted Answer

This smoker hits a sweet spot—more capacity and digital convenience than a basic analog model (like the Char-Broil) for only about $100 more. However, many users who later upgraded to a Camp Chef or Traeger say they wish they saved longer. The Masterbuilt is ideal for beginners or weekend smokers who want a large capacity for $250–$300. If you plan to smoke weekly or want heavy-duty build quality that lasts 5+ years without mods, consider stepping up to a higher-end brand.
