Question 1

Is this can opener suitable for someone with arthritis or limited hand strength?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. This is one of its most praised features. The large, soft-grip handles provide excellent leverage and comfort, requiring minimal squeezing force. The turning mechanism is famously smooth, so users with arthritis, carpal tunnel, or general hand weakness consistently report it's the easiest opener they've used.

Question 2

I've heard some can openers rust. How do I clean and maintain the OXO SteeL to prevent this?

Accepted Answer

To keep your opener in top shape, we recommend hand-washing it and drying it thoroughly immediately after use, especially the cutting wheel and gear area. While the main components are corrosion-resistant, leaving it wet or putting it in the dishwasher (which we don't advise) can lead to mineral buildup or potential rust spots over time, as noted in some long-term user reviews.

Question 3

Will it open all types of cans, like pet food, large tomato cans, or sardine tins?

Accepted Answer

It excels with standard-sized cans (soup, vegetables, beans). For very large cans (like institutional-sized tomatoes) or small, thin, or uniquely shaped tins (some sardine or specialty oil cans), performance can vary. The mechanism works best on standard rims. If you regularly open non-standard cans, you might occasionally need a different tool.

Question 4

How does the OXO SteeL compare to a classic manual opener or an electric one?

Accepted Answer

Compared to a basic manual opener, it offers far more comfort, a smoother action, and a cleaner, safer cut under the rim. Versus an electric opener, it gives you more control, takes up less space, and doesn't require an outlet, though it does require some manual turning. It's the perfect "best of both worlds" for those who want an effortless manual experience.

Question 5

What is OXO's warranty like, and what if I'm not satisfied?

Accepted Answer

OXO stands behind its products with a satisfaction guarantee. If you have any problems with your can opener, you can contact their customer service for support, which users generally find helpful. For purchases through major retailers, standard return windows also apply if you find it's not the right fit for your kitchen.
