Question 1

Do I need to sand all the rust off before using this, or can I spray it directly on?

Accepted Answer

You do not need to sand the rust down to bare metal—that's the main benefit! However, for best results, you should scrape off any loose, flaking rust and clean the surface of dirt and grease. The Reformer works by chemically converting solid rust into a stable, black primer layer. Many YouTube DIYers emphasize that proper prep (removing the "crumbly" rust) is the key to its success.

Question 2

Is this both a rust converter and a final paint? What should I put on top of it?

Accepted Answer

This is a rust reformer and primer, not a durable topcoat. Once dry, it creates a black, paintable surface. For long-term protection and your desired color, you must apply a coat of rust-inhibitive paint over it. As noted in many reviews, using a topcoat like Rust-Oleum's spray paints is highly recommended for a finished look that lasts.

Question 3

How bad is the smell, and can I use this indoors?

Accepted Answer

The chemical smell is quite strong and can linger. We strongly advise using it in a well-ventilated area only, such as an open garage or outdoors. If you must use it indoors, ensure powerful cross-ventilation (fans, open windows) and wear appropriate respiratory protection. TikTok creators often tag their projects with #DoThisOutside for a reason.

Question 4

A common complaint is the spray nozzle clogging. Any tips to prevent this?

Accepted Answer

This is a known issue with aerosol products. To minimize clogs: 1) Shake the can thoroughly for 2+ minutes after the mixing ball starts rattling. 2) Always store the can upright. 3) After use, turn the can upside down and spray until only clear propellant comes out to clear the nozzle. If it clogs, quickly removing the nozzle and soaking it in mineral spirits or acetone can often save it.

Question 5

What kind of projects is this best suited for? Is one can enough for a car wheel or a patio set?

Accepted Answer

It's perfect for medium-sized DIY projects like garden tools, file cabinets, grill parts, automotive brackets, and decorative ironwork. For larger items, coverage can vary. One 10.25 oz can typically covers 10-15 square feet. For a full patio set or a car wheel with significant rust, you'll likely need 2-3 cans. For very large projects like a fence or trailer frame, users on Reddit often suggest buying the liquid version in a can to apply with a brush for better economy.
