Question 1

Is this SSD really as durable as the IP65 rating suggests? I've seen mixed comments online.

Accepted Answer

The IP65 rating certifies protection against low-pressure water jets and dust, making it excellent for outdoor use, travel, or accidental spills. However, it's not marketed as shockproof. Many users love its rugged, rubberized design for daily adventures. For extreme physical impacts, a fully armored drive like the LaCie Rugged might be a better fit.

Question 2

I'm worried about the drive failing and losing data, as some Reddit posts mention. How reliable is it?

Accepted Answer

With over 84,000 reviews averaging 4.6 stars, the vast majority of users report flawless, high-performance reliability. As with any storage device, the #1 rule is to never use it as your *only* copy of critical data. We strongly recommend maintaining a separate backup. The drive is backed by a 5-year limited warranty for peace of mind.

Question 3

Will I actually get the advertised 1050MB/s speed, and is it compatible with my PS5, iPad, or older laptop?

Accepted Answer

You'll achieve peak speeds (up to 1050MB/s) when connected to a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) port, commonly found on newer computers, PS5, and modern tablets. It's fully compatible with all these devices. On older USB-A 3.0 ports, you'll still get excellent speeds (around 400-500MB/s). The included USB-C *and* USB-A cables ensure compatibility with almost any system.

Question 4

What's the deal with the firmware and encryption software? Do I need to use them?

Accepted Answer

The "Updated Firmware" means the drive ships with the latest performance and stability enhancements—no action is needed. The bundled SanDisk SecureAccess software offers optional password protection. While convenient, some tech-savvy users on forums prefer third-party tools like BitLocker (Windows) or VeraCrypt for encryption. Using the software is entirely optional.

Question 5

How does this compare to the Samsung T7, and who is this drive best suited for?

Accepted Answer

Both are top-tier drives. The SanDisk Extreme excels with its included rugged IP65 rating and often has a slight edge in sequential write speeds for large file transfers. The Samsung T7 Shield is its direct competitor with similar protection. This SanDisk is a perfect match for content creators, travelers, and students who need a fast, tough, pocket-sized drive for large media files and on-the-go use.
