Question 1

How difficult is the installation, and will it fit my existing door?

Accepted Answer

Most users find the physical installation straightforward if you're replacing a standard deadbolt. The lock includes a template and clear instructions. The key is to check your door's backset (the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole)—it needs to be either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4", which covers most homes. Many YouTube tutorials confirm it's a manageable DIY project.

Question 2

Is the Wi-Fi connection reliable, and how is the app performance?

Accepted Answer

The built-in Wi-Fi is a major convenience as it requires no separate hub. While most connections are stable, some users on forums like Reddit report occasional delays or disconnects, especially with weaker router signals. The Schlage Home app receives mixed feedback; it's praised for core functions but some note it can be slow to update status. For the most reliable remote access within the Apple ecosystem, users highly recommend setting up Apple Home Key.

Question 3

What's the real-world battery life, and what happens if they die while I'm locked out?

Accepted Answer

Battery life varies heavily with usage. With regular Wi-Fi activity (multiple remote checks/locks per day), some users report changing batteries every 6-9 months. With minimal Wi-Fi use, it can last over a year. You'll get ample low-battery warnings via the app and a keypad flash. Crucially, if batteries die completely, you can use a 9V battery held against the terminals under the keypad for a temporary boost to unlock it, and your physical key is always a backup.

Question 4

How seamless is the setup with Apple Home Key and the rest of the smart home?

Accepted Answer

Once set up, unlocking with Apple Home Key (via iPhone or Apple Watch) is consistently praised as fast and magical. However, the initial pairing process to get it into your Apple Wallet can be tricky. A common tip from user reviews is to ensure your iPhone's NFC is on and to hold it very close to the lock's center. The lock is also officially compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control, integrating well into most smart home setups.

Question 5

Is this lock worth the premium price, and who is it best for?

Accepted Answer

This lock is a top-tier investment for those prioritizing security, a keyless lifestyle, and deep Apple integration. It's ideal for homeowners, families with kids or dog walkers, and landlords. If your primary needs are basic remote locking and you're on a tighter budget, more affordable brands exist. But for a robust, hub-free lock that works natively with Apple Home, the Encode Plus is a leading choice, despite some noted app refinements needed.
