Question 1

I’ve heard mixed things about battery life. What’s the real-world expectancy, and what affects it?

Accepted Answer

Most users report 4-6 months of battery life with standard use. The biggest factor is your Wi-Fi signal strength at the door. A weak signal causes the lock to work harder, draining batteries faster. Using features like auto-lock frequently or having a high volume of app checks will also reduce lifespan. For best results, ensure your router is reasonably close.

Question 2

Is the installation DIY-friendly, or will I need a locksmith for my older door?

Accepted Answer

For most standard doors, it's a straightforward DIY swap using the included template. However, based on community forums and YouTube reviews, owners of very thick doors, doors with unusual preparations, or homes with decorative sidelights sometimes need an extra mounting plate or professional help. We recommend measuring your current deadbolt setup and comparing it to the product specs before purchasing.

Question 3

How well does it work if I’m not fully invested in the Apple ecosystem?

Accepted Answer

You can fully operate the lock using the keypad, physical key, and the Schlage Home app for Wi-Fi control (including remote locking/unlocking and creating codes). However, the signature feature—unlocking via Apple Watch or iPhone with HomeKey—requires Apple HomeKit. It also works with Alexa and Google Assistant for voice commands, but integration is more limited than with Apple Home.

Question 4

What happens during a power outage or if the Wi-Fi goes down?

Accepted Answer

The lock operates independently. You can always use your physical key or the built-in keypad with your PIN code. A Wi-Fi outage only affects *remote* access via the app; local keypad and key access are 100% reliable. The lock runs on batteries, so a home power outage doesn't impact it.

Question 5

For the premium price, what makes this lock a better value than more affordable smart locks?

Accepted Answer

The Schlage Encode Plus justifies its price through three key areas: 1) Industry-leading build quality and ANSI Grade 1 security certification (the highest for residential locks), 2) Seamless Apple HomeKey integration, which is unmatched in speed and convenience for iPhone users, and 3) Dual connectivity (Wi-Fi + built-in Thread radio) for a more robust smart home future. It’s designed for users who prioritize security, premium materials, and deep smart home integration over upfront cost.
