Question 1

Will this meter work on aluminum body panels or only steel?

Accepted Answer

Great question—many buyers ask the same thing. This gauge is designed for ferrous (steel) surfaces. It will give a reading on aluminum, but accuracy isn't guaranteed, especially for thin panels. If you're checking a mix of materials, some TikTok reviewers recommend testing it on a known spot first to get a feel for its behavior.

Question 2

How do I know if the readings are accurate? Can I test it before use?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can. Just place the probe on a clean, unpainted metal surface (like the inside of the hood or door jamb) to see if it zeroes out at the expected baseline. A few Reddit users mentioned the manual glosses over this step—so it’s smart to do a quick calibration check on a known area before diving into the inspection.

Question 3

What happens if the device breaks or gives faulty readings—can I get a refund?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. The unit comes with a standard return window. If it arrives damaged or fails to produce consistent readings on steel panels, contact the seller within the return period. Some buyers on YouTube noted that the build is a bit fragile, so handle it carefully and reach out promptly if you're not satisfied.

Question 4

Does it detect bondo or body filler under paint, or just total coating thickness?

Accepted Answer

It measures total coating thickness, not layer-by-layer composition. A very high reading compared to the car’s original spec can suggest filler work—but it won’t tell you if it’s filler, paint, or clear coat. For a quick “is this paint original?” check, it’s useful. For deeper diagnostics, professional detailers often use a more advanced gauge.

Question 5

Who is this meter best suited for, and when should I consider a higher-end model?

Accepted Answer

This is ideal for used car buyers who want a budget-friendly way to spot obvious repaints or thick coatings before making a purchase. Weekend mechanics and first-time inspectors love its portability and speed. However, if you’re a professional technician or work on high-end cars daily, the build consistency and calibration limits might frustrate you—in that case, many in the community suggest investing in a PosiTector or similar pro-grade tool.
