Question 1

How does the EU 42 1/2 fit — should I size up?

Accepted Answer

Many hikers on Reddit and YouTube suggest sizing up half a size, especially if you have wide feet or plan to wear thick socks. The EU 42 1/2 typically maps to a US men’s 9–9.5, but Scarpa’s last runs slightly narrow. If you’re between sizes, go with the larger one for comfort on long descents.

Question 2

Are these boots comfortable right out of the box, or is there a break-in period?

Accepted Answer

Expect a break-in period. TikTok users often mention “brutal first miles” before the leather softens. Most people report 10–20 miles of discomfort, then a glove-like fit. Wearing them around the house with thick socks for a few days can reduce heel blisters on the trail.

Question 3

How waterproof and breathable are they in real conditions?

Accepted Answer

The GTX membrane keeps water out in rain, slush, and stream crossings — users praise that. Breathability is average: fine for cool, wet climates, but sweaty in summer heat. If you hike mostly in warm, dry conditions, consider a non-GTX or more ventilated boot.

Question 4

What’s the return policy if the fit or performance doesn’t work out?

Accepted Answer

Return windows vary by retailer, but most offer 30 days for unworn boots in original packaging. Some buyers mention return shipping costs eating into refunds, so check the seller’s policy before ordering. If you bought directly from Scarpa, their warranty covers defects but not fit issues.

Question 5

Who are these boots best for, and what are better alternatives?

Accepted Answer

They’re ideal for 3-season alpine hiking, backpacking with heavy loads, and wet, rocky terrain. Not great for casual walks or wide feet. If you want lighter or wider options, look at Salomon Quest 4 GTX, La Sportiva Trango Tech GTX, or Scarpa Zodiac Plus GTX. Many users say the ZG Trek GTX is a solid choice if you prioritize support and waterproofing over weight.
