Question 1

I've heard the earpads don't last. Is this true, and can I replace them?

Accepted Answer

It's a common point of feedback. The stock synthetic leather earpads can wear down and flake after extended daily use (often 12+ months). The good news is they are very easy to replace! Official Shure pads and many well-reviewed third-party options (like velour or hybrid pads) are available online. Swapping them refreshes comfort and can subtly alter sound isolation, which many Reddit users in studio forums discuss in detail.

Question 2

How comfortable are these for long sessions, and do they work with glasses?

Accepted Answer

Comfort is highly praised for their deep, plush ear cups that fit around the ear without pressing on it. Most users find them excellent for multi-hour studio work. However, a consistent note from some reviewers is the firm clamping force, which can cause fatigue for a minority with larger heads during extremely long sessions. They generally work well with glasses due to the deep design, but the seal (and thus bass response) might be slightly affected.

Question 3

Are the Shure SRH840A suitable for casual listening, gaming, or just studio work?

Accepted Answer

They are *optimized* for critical listening and studio monitoring, meaning they provide a very accurate, detailed, and flat sound profile. If you love hearing music exactly as the mixer intended, they're fantastic. However, if you prefer a powerful, "fun" bass boost for hip-hop, EDM, or immersive gaming explosions, you might find them too neutral. Many TikTok and YouTube comparisons note the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x as a more "fun" alternative for casual use.

Question 4

What's the main difference between the SRH840 and the SRH840A, and is the cable detachable?

Accepted Answer

This is a key pre-purchase question! The SRH840A is the updated model. Its most significant upgrade is the detachable cable (a common request for the older model), which adds longevity and convenience. The 'A' version also features a slightly revised frequency response for even greater accuracy and improved padding. Yes, the SRH840A cable is absolutely detachable, connecting via a sturdy locking mini-XLR connector.

Question 5

How is the build quality, and what comes in the box?

Accepted Answer

The build is a major highlight, with a sturdy metal-reinforced headband and robust folding hinges that feel built to last in a professional environment. They collapse neatly for storage. In the box, you get the headphones, a detachable coiled cable (3m), a detachable straight cable (1.8m), a 6.3mm adapter, and a soft drawstring pouch. A common piece of feedback from users is that while the pouch is fine, investing in a hard shell case is recommended for serious travel protection.
