Question 1

Is the installation truly DIY-friendly, or will I need to drill new holes in my door?

Accepted Answer

Overwhelmingly, users across platforms like YouTube and Reddit praise the installation as a straightforward DIY project. It's designed to fit the standard ANSI door prep used by most deadbolts in the US. In the vast majority of cases, you'll only need a screwdriver and about 30 minutes—no drilling required. The included guide is clear, and many find it easier than changing a traditional lock.

Question 2

How reliable is the Wi-Fi connection and battery life in real-world use?

Accepted Answer

This is the most common topic in reviews. The built-in Wi-Fi is convenient but requires a strong signal at your door. If your router is far away, you may experience occasional disconnections. As for batteries, while Schlage provides an estimate, real-world life depends on usage and Wi-Fi signal strength. A family using it multiple times daily with a weak signal might change batteries every 3-4 months, while a quieter household may get 6+ months. Using high-quality lithium batteries is highly recommended for longer life.

Question 3

Can I still use a physical key if the battery dies or the electronics fail?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. This is a key feature for peace of mind. The Schlage Encode includes a traditional keyway (using a Schlage "C" key), allowing you to unlock the door with a physical key if the keypad or Wi-Fi is ever unavailable. Just be sure to keep a spare key in a safe place, as you would with any lock.

Question 4

Who is this lock best suited for, and who might want to look at an alternative?

Accepted Answer

This lock is an excellent fit for tech-savvy homeowners, busy families, and rental hosts who want the convenience of keyless entry and remote access without buying a separate smart home hub. If your primary goal is deep integration with systems like Apple HomeKit or you have a very weak Wi-Fi signal at your door, you might consider a Zigbee or Z-Wave model (like the Schlage Encode Plus) paired with a dedicated hub for more stable connectivity. For those wanting to keep their existing exterior hardware, a retrofit option like August could be better.

Question 5

What happens during a power outage? Will I get locked out?

Accepted Answer

No, you won't be locked out. The lock is powered by internal batteries, so it operates independently of your home's power. You can always use the touchscreen keypad or your physical key to enter. The Wi-Fi functionality will be offline if your router loses power, but the core locking mechanism remains fully operational.
