Question 1

Do I need to buy the Connect Hub separately to use this lock remotely?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for remote access and control via Wi-Fi (like unlocking from the office), the August Connect Hub is required. The lock itself uses Bluetooth to communicate directly with your phone when you're nearby. Many users love the auto-unlock feature this enables, but if you want to check your lock's status or control it from anywhere, the hub is a necessary add-on. Think of the lock as the brain and the hub as its internet connection.

Question 2

How reliable is the auto-unlock feature, and can I adjust its sensitivity?

Accepted Answer

The auto-unlock, which senses your phone's Bluetooth and unlocks as you approach, is a beloved but occasionally finicky feature. Most users find it works seamlessly about 80-90% of the time. You *can* adjust the proximity range in the app, which many Reddit users recommend tweaking to find the "sweet spot" for your home's layout to prevent it from triggering too early or too late.

Question 3

Is the installation truly easy, and how do I know if it will fit my existing door?

Accepted Answer

Based on hundreds of reviews, installation is consistently rated as very straightforward, often taking under 30 minutes with just a screwdriver. It's designed to fit over your existing single-cylinder deadbolt on the interior side, so you keep your current keys and exterior hardware. The August website has a simple compatibility guide, but it fits the vast majority of standard deadbolts.

Question 4

What's the real-world battery life, and what happens when the batteries die?

Accepted Answer

Battery life varies with usage but typically lasts 3-6 months. The app sends clear low-battery alerts. A key point mentioned by users on TikTok: always keep a standard 9V battery in your bag or car. If the batteries die completely, you can touch the 9V to the contacts on the bottom of the lock for a temporary power boost to unlock it, then replace the internal AA batteries.

Question 5

Who is this smart lock best suited for, and who might want to look elsewhere?

Accepted Answer

It's perfect for tech-savvy individuals, families wanting keyless entry for kids or dog walkers, and anyone who hates fumbling for keys. If you want built-in Wi-Fi without a separate hub, consider alternatives like the Schlage Encode. If you desire a completely minimalist look or are deeply invested in the Apple ecosystem, a lock like the Level Lock+ might be a better fit. For those wanting simple, affordable keypad entry without smart features, a basic keypad deadbolt could suffice.
