Question 1

Does this monitor work with 5GHz WiFi, or only 2.4GHz?

Accepted Answer

It connects only to 2.4GHz WiFi, which is a common sticking point in user reviews — several parents on Reddit mentioned spending ages troubleshooting before realizing this. If your router broadcasts both bands, make sure your phone is on the 2.4GHz network during setup. Once paired, the parent unit works independently of WiFi, so you're not fully dependent on your network.

Question 2

Do the cameras need to stay plugged in, or can they run on batteries?

Accepted Answer

Both cameras require a constant power source — there's no battery mode. This is one of the most frequent complaints from buyers who wanted to mount a camera high on a wall or in a corner without an outlet nearby. Plan your camera placement around available outlets, or pick up longer USB cables if you need extra reach.

Question 3

Is the split-screen view available on the app, or only on the 5" parent unit?

Accepted Answer

You get split-screen on both. The 5" parent unit shows both rooms side by side out of the box, and the free VTech app mirrors that view on your phone. Many TikTok users specifically called this out as the reason they chose the VM901-2 over single-camera monitors — it's genuinely convenient for keeping an eye on two kids at once.

Question 4

Are there any subscription fees, or is everything included?

Accepted Answer

No subscription required. Live viewing, two-way talk, pan-tilt-zoom, and night vision all work straight out of the box with no monthly cost — a point reviewers consistently highlight as a big win versus competitors that lock features behind a paywall. If you want recorded clips, you'll need to add your own microSD card, but live monitoring is completely free.

Question 5

I've seen complaints about connectivity and screen glitching — how common is that, and is it worth the risk?

Accepted Answer

It's a real but minority issue. Most of the 7,500+ reviews are positive, but a noticeable slice of users report occasional app disconnects or parent-unit freezes, usually tied to weak WiFi or router band conflicts. If you have a stable 2.4GHz signal and don't mind the occasional reboot, it's excellent value for a two-camera system. If rock-solid reliability is your top priority and budget allows, some parents ultimately switched to pricier alternatives like Nanit or Motorola — but for the price, the VM901-2 remains a strong pick for most families.
