Question 1

The keys say “weighted,” but I’ve heard they feel springy. Is this a good keyboard for learning proper piano technique?

Accepted Answer

Many buyers appreciate the Alesis for its price and 480 sounds, but seasoned players on Reddit and YouTube often note the keys feel lighter and springier than a traditional acoustic piano. The action is semi-weighted, making it fine for learning notes and basic chords. If you're serious about developing proper finger strength and dynamics, you may want to test a fully weighted keyboard like the Yamaha P-145 in person before committing.

Question 2

I keep seeing TikTok videos with cool lighting effects – does this keyboard have light-up keys for lessons?

Accepted Answer

No, the Alesis 88-key does not include light-up keys, despite what some short-form videos might suggest. The included “piano lessons” refer to a basic app with sheet music and tutorials, not interactive backlit keys. If guided light-up learning is your priority, you’ll want to look at models specifically designed for that, such as the Yamaha EZ-300.

Question 3

Can I use this as a MIDI controller with my laptop or iPad for music production?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and this is a strong point for the Alesis. It connects via USB MIDI to Windows, Mac, iPad, and most DAWs (including GarageBand, FL Studio, and Ableton) with no extra drivers needed. TikTok users and student producers consistently praise it as a budget-friendly controller for home studios.

Question 4

I’m worried about reliability – do keys or speakers break after a few months?

Accepted Answer

This is the most common concern in longer-term reviews. Several users report keys starting to stick or produce clicking sounds after 3–6 months of regular use. The speakers are also mentioned as sounding thin at higher volumes. If you have an extended return window (e.g., via Amazon or a retailer with a good return policy), many suggest stress-testing the keyboard thoroughly in the first month. The included basic pedal is also a weak point, so budget for an upgrade.

Question 5

Is this worth it for a complete beginner, or should I spend more upfront?

Accepted Answer

For a young child (ages 7–12) or a casual learner exploring if they enjoy piano, the Alesis offers excellent value with its massive sound library, built-in speakers, and included stand and adapter. For a motivated adult or teen wanting a realistic piano feel that won’t need replacing in a year, the consensus from piano teachers and forums is to stretch your budget to a Roland FP-10 or Yamaha P-145. The Alesis is a fun starter kit, not a long-term instrument.
