Question 1

Does this come with a steam box, or do I need to build/buy one separately?

Accepted Answer

The Earlex SS77USSG is a steam *generator* only. It does not include a steam box. You will need to provide or build your own steam box or bending chamber to connect to the hose. Many users construct simple, effective boxes from PVC pipe or insulated wood. Online woodworking communities and YouTube have great tutorials for this.

Question 2

I’ve read comments about heat loss in the long hose. Is this a major issue for bending wood?

Accepted Answer

The 12-foot hose offers great flexibility, but some heat loss is inevitable over that distance. Most users find it manageable by allowing a short extra warm-up time and ensuring their steam box is well-insulated. For best results, keep the hose as straight and short as your setup allows. The consistent power of the generator generally compensates well, as noted in many positive reviews.

Question 3

What kind of water should I use, and how do I maintain it to prevent failure?

Accepted Answer

Using distilled or de-mineralized water is highly recommended to prevent lime scale buildup inside the generator, which can affect performance and longevity. This is a frequent tip from experienced users on forums. Regular descaling according to the manual is also crucial. Proper maintenance is key, as the few reports of unit failure often link to mineral deposits or using hard tap water.

Question 4

Is this suitable for a beginner, or is it more for experienced woodworkers?

Accepted Answer

While powerful and effective, it has a bit of a learning curve. Beginners should be prepared to research setup, steam box construction, and safety practices beyond the basic manual. It's best suited for dedicated DIYers or hobbyists ready for a project. If you're looking for an all-in-one, beginner-friendly kit for a single small project, this might be more machine than you need.

Question 5

Besides wood bending, what are other common uses for this steam generator?

Accepted Answer

A highly praised secondary use is for paint and varnish removal. The steady, high-volume steam is excellent for softening old finishes on detailed woodwork, doors, or furniture before scraping. This versatility adds to its value for restoration projects. Many YouTube demonstrators show this application alongside bending.
