Question 1

Is this drive sold in a retail box with a standard warranty?

Accepted Answer

No. This is an OEM "Bulk" drive, meaning it typically arrives in a sealed anti-static bag without retail packaging, accessories, or installation screws. The warranty is usually handled by the seller, not directly by Western Digital, so be sure to check the seller's return and replacement policy before purchasing.

Question 2

I've seen reviews mentioning incorrect specs. Will I get the exact WD10EURX model with a 64MB cache?

Accepted Answer

This is a common concern. While listed as a WD10EURX (64MB cache), some buyers have reported receiving functionally similar but different models (like the WD10EZRX with 32MB cache). Performance differences are often minimal, but if exact specifications are critical for your project, you may want to consider a retail-boxed drive where the model is guaranteed.

Question 3

Is this drive reliable, or is there a high failure rate?

Accepted Answer

Experiences vary widely. Many users report years of reliable service, especially when used in lighter-duty applications like secondary storage or DVRs. However, a notable number of reviews mention drives failing early or arriving dead (DOA). This split in experience is why the seller's return policy is very important for peace of mind.

Question 4

What is this drive best suited for? Who should buy it?

Accepted Answer

The "AV-GP" line is designed for audio/video streaming, making it a cost-effective choice for surveillance DVRs, media centers, or as a secondary/backup drive. It's less ideal as a primary drive for an everyday desktop PC where quieter operation and a straightforward warranty are higher priorities. It's best for budget-aware buyers who understand the OEM nature of the product.

Question 5

It's described as "Green Power" for low heat, but some say it runs hot and loud. What should I expect?

Accepted Answer

You may experience more noise and heat than expected for a "Green" drive. As noted in several tech forum discussions, these OEM AV drives can have different firmware behavior. They are optimized for 24/7 streaming, not necessarily for silent desktop operation. If near-silence is crucial, a drive specifically marketed for quiet computing (like certain WD Blue or Red models) would be a better fit.
