Question 1

Is this lock difficult to install on an older or non-standard door?

Accepted Answer

For most standard doors, installation is famously straightforward—many users report finishing in under 30 minutes using the included template. However, social media DIY forums highlight that if your door is very old, thick, or has a non-standard frame, you may encounter alignment challenges with the deadbolt and strike plate. It's wise to measure your current setup against Schlage's specifications beforehand.

Question 2

How reliable is the Wi-Fi connection and app control in real-world use?

Accepted Answer

The lock's core mechanical function is highly reliable. The Wi-Fi connectivity, however, depends heavily on signal strength. Many Reddit users note that if your router is far from your front door, the connection can be intermittent. For consistent remote access, a strong Wi-Fi signal at the door is crucial. The app receives praise for features like guest codes but, like all software, can have occasional bugs after updates.

Question 3

I manage a rental property. How well does the guest access feature work for Airbnb?

Accepted Answer

This is one of the lock's standout features! Hosts on platforms like TikTok and Airbnb forums love the ability to create unique, scheduled access codes for each guest directly from the app. It eliminates key exchanges and allows you to change codes remotely between stays. The integration is seamless and is frequently cited as a primary reason for purchase among vacation rental hosts.

Question 4

What's the real battery life, and what happens if the batteries die completely?

Accepted Answer

Battery life varies with usage. While advertised for long life, users on review platforms often report changing batteries every 6-9 months with normal use, more frequently if Wi-Fi activity is high. Crucially, the lock will give you low-battery warnings in the app and via a beep. If the batteries die entirely, you can still use the physical key (included) for entry, and the exterior keypad is designed to provide just enough temporary power from a 9V battery (touched to terminals underneath) to enter a code in an emergency.

Question 5

Should I choose this over other smart locks like August or Yale?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your priorities. The Schlage Encode is celebrated for its all-in-one, robust design and built-in keypad. Compared to August (which retrofits inside), Schlage offers a more integrated look. Compared to some Yale models, it often wins on ease of installation. However, if you are deeply invested in the Apple Home ecosystem, the Schlage Encode *Plus* (with Thread) or a Yale with HomeKit might be better. If your Wi-Fi is weak at your door, a lock with a separate bridge (like some Yale models) could provide a more stable connection.
