Question 1

Is this tape made of 100% silicone, and is it suitable for outdoor use?

Accepted Answer

The tape is a self-fusing silicone-impregnated rubber. It performs excellently for waterproofing and creates a strong, seamless seal. For long-term, permanent outdoor exposure to direct sunlight and extreme weather, some users on DIY forums recommend pure silicone tape or UV-resistant products for maximum longevity. For most outdoor repairs like garden hoses or temporary fittings, however, it works very well.

Question 2

How do I use it correctly? I’ve never used "self-fusing" tape before.

Accepted Answer

The key is stretching it as you wrap! Overlap each turn by about half the tape's width while pulling it taut (about 1.5 times its original width). This tension activates the fusion process. After wrapping, rub the finished seal firmly to bond the layers. For best results, ensure the surface is clean and dry. As many YouTube tutorials show, a little practice makes perfect.

Question 3

Can I use this on a leaking pipe without turning the water off?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this is one of its standout features for emergency repairs. The tape is waterproof and can be applied to wet surfaces. Stretch and wrap it tightly directly over the leak. The seal forms almost instantly, providing a watertight patch that can stop or significantly reduce the leak, buying you time for a permanent fix.

Question 4

How does it compare to traditional plumber's (PTFE) tape or duct tape?

Accepted Answer

It's a different tool for different jobs. Unlike PTFE tape which is for sealing pipe *threads*, this tape wraps *around* objects to create a sheath. Compared to duct tape, it's fully waterproof, doesn't use a glue that dries out or leaves residue, and creates a cleaner, more durable seal for pressures and insulation. Think of it as a heavy-duty, moldable wrap rather than an adhesive tape.

Question 5

Is the tape reusable or does it leave a sticky residue when removed?

Accepted Answer

It is not designed to be reusable once fully fused and set (usually after 24 hours). The great news is that it leaves no sticky residue upon removal because it bonds to itself, not the surface. You can typically cut it off cleanly. This makes it ideal for temporary tool grips or cable bundling where you might want to re-do the wrap later.
