Question 1

Is the paper thick enough to prevent bleed-through with markers like Sharpies or mildliners?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the 68lb/100gsm paper performs very well with dry media and fineliners. Based on numerous user reviews, light markers and brush pens show minimal to no bleed-through. However, for heavy, repeated layering with alcohol-based markers (like Copics) or large washes of ink, some ghosting or slight buckling may occur. It's excellent for sketching and lining, but not designed as a dedicated marker pad.

Question 2

How durable is the spiral binding for carrying in a backpack or travel bag?

Accepted Answer

The top-spiral binding is sturdy for desk use and allows the book to lay perfectly flat. However, a common note from students and commuters is that the metal coil can snag or bend if tossed loosely into a packed bag. For maximum longevity, we recommend storing it in a sleeve or a separate compartment in your bag.

Question 3

Who is this sketchbook best suited for? Is it just for beginners?

Accepted Answer

It's a fantastic choice for a wide range of users! Beginners love its affordability and forgiveness. Students and hobbyists appreciate it as a reliable daily sketchbook. Even many professional artists use it for preliminary sketches and brainstorming because the paper quality is high for the price, making it perfect for low-pressure practice. It's less ideal for finished pieces requiring heavy wet media.

Question 4

The cover feels thin. Will it protect the pages?

Accepted Answer

The cover is a sturdy cardboard, designed to be lightweight and flexible. While it protects the pages from general dust and light handling, it is not a rigid hardcover. If you plan on very rough travel or need maximum protection for your work, you may want to pair it with a portfolio case or a simple DIY cover. Many users on platforms like Reddit suggest this for long-term storage.

Question 5

How does this compare to more expensive brands like Strathmore or Canson?

Accepted Answer

The Soucolor sketchbook is consistently praised for offering exceptional value. You are getting premium-feeling paper at a budget price. The trade-off is typically in the cover sturdiness and binding durability compared to higher-end brands. For pencil, charcoal, pastel, and light ink work, it competes very closely. If your primary work involves watercolor, acrylic, or heavy ink, investing in a dedicated mixed-media or watercolor pad from those brands would be a better fit.
