Question 1

How accurate is the TopTes TS-630, really? I've seen mixed things online.

Accepted Answer

Great question. Many users find it works well as a relative indicator—it tells you if wood is definitely wet or definitely dry. However, some TikTok reviewers and Reddit woodworkers note that readings can vary with pin pressure and wood grain. For critical projects like flooring installation, we recommend a higher-end model. For checking firewood or drywall dampness, the TS-630’s accuracy is perfectly sufficient.

Question 2

Can this meter be used on drywall or concrete before drilling?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it works well on drywall, plaster, and even soft concrete. The pin tips penetrate surface layers to measure moisture content. A common tip from YouTube reviewers: for drywall, press the pins just deep enough to make contact without damaging the paper surface. For concrete or tile, the pins may be too short, so a pinless scanner might be a better choice.

Question 3

Are the pins replaceable? I’m worried about them wearing out.

Accepted Answer

The pins are integrated and are not user-replaceable. This is a common concern. If you plan on heavy daily use (testing hundreds of pieces), you might consider the General Tools MMD4E instead, which has replaceable pins. For occasional home use, the TS-630 pins should last for years if stored clean and dry.

Question 4

I keep hearing the auto-off feature is annoying. Can it be disabled?

Accepted Answer

No, the auto-off cannot be disabled—it shuts down after about 30 seconds of inactivity to save battery. Some users find this frustrating during extended testing sessions. A simple workaround is to wiggle the pins slightly every 15 seconds to keep it awake. Many satisfied owners just get used to it, noting it helps prevent dead batteries.

Question 5

Is the TS-630 good for measuring firewood moisture before burning?

Accepted Answer

It's one of the most popular uses, but with one caveat. The meter works best on freshly split wood with a flat surface. Many Reddit users caution that the tricolor backlight (green/yellow/red) makes it easy to spot damp wood. However, for extremely wet or punky wood, readings can be misleading. A good rule of thumb: test multiple spots on each log and average the readings. If the majority flash red, your wood needs more seasoning.
