Question 1

How loud is the cooling fan, and can it be replaced if it bothers me?

Accepted Answer

Many Reddit users have noted the 80mm fan produces a noticeable high-pitched hum, especially in quiet rooms. It’s fine for server closets or basements, but not ideal for a bedroom desk. The fan uses a standard 3-pin connector and is replaceable—several YouTube tutorials show swapping it for a quieter Noctua fan in under 10 minutes. CENMATE does not officially support fan replacements for warranty purposes, so check with support first if that’s a concern.

Question 2

Can I mix 2.5” SSDs and 3.5” HDDs in the same enclosure?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it supports both sizes simultaneously—each bay individually accepts any 2.5” or 3.5” SATA drive. However, many TikTok users have pointed out that the “tool-free” claim only applies to 3.5” drives; 2.5” SSDs require four small screws per drive (not included in the box). We recommend picking up an M3 screw kit off Amazon for a few dollars to avoid the frustration.

Question 3

Does this enclosure work with macOS for Time Machine or TRIM support?

Accepted Answer

It works plug-and-play with macOS and Windows—no drivers needed. You can absolutely use it with Time Machine. For TRIM on SSDs, macOS enables it automatically over USB, but some users on tech forums reported that it depends on your specific SSD controller and macOS version. We suggest testing your particular drive—if TRIM doesn’t enable, you can still use the drives normally, just without the background optimization.

Question 4

What’s the return policy if the unit arrives dead or the USB port fails after a few months?

Accepted Answer

CENMATE offers a 30-day return window through Amazon (if purchased there) and a 1-year warranty directly. Some Reddit users have reported mixed experiences with warranty claims for USB port issues, so we recommend keeping your purchase receipt and testing all 12 bays immediately upon arrival. For faster troubleshooting, contact CENMATE’s support via their website—response times average 2-3 business days.

Question 5

How does this compare to the Mediasonic ProBox, which is often recommended instead?

Accepted Answer

Both are 12-bay DAS enclosures, but they cater to different needs. The CENMATE wins on price (around $30-40 cheaper), premium aluminum build, and a slightly smaller footprint. The Mediasonic ProBox edges ahead with a quieter 120mm fan, individual drive activity LEDs per bay, and included screws for 2.5” drives. If you need absolute silence and drive status visibility, pay the extra for Mediasonic. If budget matters most and you don’t mind a bit of fan whine, the CENMATE is a solid buy.
