Question 1

Will the Deco 7 BE23 completely replace my current internet router?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, yes. The primary Deco unit is designed to replace your existing router. You would connect it directly to your modem. However, if you have a combined modem/router from your ISP, you can place the Deco system in "Access Point" mode. Many users on forums like Reddit have successfully done this to simplify their setup and use the Deco's superior mesh networking.

Question 2

My house is about 3,000 sq ft with some thick interior walls. Is the 2-pack sufficient?

Accepted Answer

The 2-pack is rated for up to 4,500 sq ft under ideal conditions (open floor plans). For a 3,000 sq ft home with signal-blocking materials like plaster or brick, a 2-pack should provide excellent coverage, but optimal placement is key. We recommend starting with the two units and using the Deco app's signal strength indicator to find the best spot for the second unit. If you find a stubborn dead zone, you can easily add a third Deco unit to the system later.

Question 3

How essential is the paid HomeShield subscription? What do I get for free?

Accepted Answer

The free version of HomeShield provides robust core security (intrusion detection, malware blocking) and basic parental controls like pausing internet access. The paid subscription unlocks advanced features like detailed activity reports, time limits, content filtering by category, and priority security updates. Based on social media feedback, most families find the free version perfectly adequate, while the subscription appeals to those wanting granular oversight.

Question 4

I've heard setup is easy, but what if I run into problems?

Accepted Answer

The TP-Link Deco app provides a very intuitive, step-by-step guide that the vast majority of users complete in under 15 minutes. If you do encounter a hiccup—a rare occurrence often mentioned in reviews—the most common fix is a simple power cycle of your modem and Deco units before starting again. TP-Link also offers comprehensive online support and a warranty. The overwhelming sentiment from TikTok and YouTube reviewers is that this is one of the simplest mesh systems to configure.

Question 5

As a tech-savvy user, will I find the advanced settings too limited?

Accepted Answer

The Deco system prioritizes user-friendliness and stability over granular, advanced configuration. While it offers essential features like port forwarding, DHCP, and VPN, it may not satisfy users who want to tweak every radio setting or run custom firmware. If deep, pro-level control is your top priority, a traditional high-end router or a different prosumer mesh system might be a better fit. However, for unparalleled whole-home coverage, stability, and seamless roaming, the Deco BE23 is consistently praised for its performance.
