Question 1

Is the audio quality good enough for transcribing lectures or interviews?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. The primary strength of this recorder is capturing clear, intelligible speech in controlled environments. Based on thousands of reviews, students and journalists consistently praise its performance for lectures, interviews, and meetings where the speaker is close and background noise is minimal. The audio files are perfectly suited for transcription software or manual typing.

Question 2

How durable is it? I've read comments about it feeling lightweight.

Accepted Answer

The body is lightweight plastic, which is a trade-off for its portability and low cost. While it's not built for rough handling, most users find it durable enough for daily use in a bag or pocket. A common note from long-term users is to be gentle with the battery compartment door, as it's a known point of wear. For heavy-duty field work, a more rugged case is recommended.

Question 3

Is the built-in USB convenient, and is file management easy?

Accepted Answer

The built-in USB arm is hugely convenient for plugging directly into a computer—no cables needed! However, a frequent piece of feedback is that the file organization on the device itself can be confusing. It creates numbered folders. For easiest management, we suggest transferring your files to a dedicated folder on your computer immediately after recording and labeling them clearly.

Question 4

Should I buy this or just use my smartphone's voice memo app?

Accepted Answer

This recorder excels where smartphones fall short: battery life, storage, and focus. A pair of AAA batteries lasts for dozens of hours of recording, and you'll never get interrupted by a call. It's a dedicated device with superior microphones for voice, making it a smarter choice for important, long-duration recordings like classes or legal notes. For quick, casual reminders, your phone is fine.

Question 5

Who is this voice recorder NOT ideal for?

Accepted Answer

It's not the best choice for recording music, live concerts, or in very noisy environments (like busy cafes), as it picks up a lot of ambient sound. Users looking for stereo recording, ultra-high-fidelity, or advanced editing features would be better served by a recorder like the Zoom H1n. This Sony is the champion of straightforward, reliable voice recording.
