Question 1

Will the white color match my boat's gelcoat perfectly?

Accepted Answer

For a perfect, invisible match, this pen may not be ideal. Many users note the white has a bright, clean finish that can stand out against older, sun-faded, or off-white gelcoat. It's excellent for covering scratches on aluminum, metal rails, and outboards, or for quick cosmetic touch-ups where a slight variation is acceptable. For a flawless blend on fiberglass hulls, a custom-mixed gelcoat paste is often recommended.

Question 2

Is this paint suitable for repairs below the waterline or is it fully waterproof?

Accepted Answer

It is water-based and designed for topside (above waterline) use. While it provides good coverage, feedback from boat owners suggests it may not hold up as a permanent solution for areas constantly submerged. It's best used for scratches on the hull sides, deck, or superstructure. For bottom paint repairs, a dedicated antifouling touch-up product is a better choice.

Question 3

How durable is the repair against fuel, sun, and cleaning products?

Accepted Answer

As a water-based enamel, it offers decent durability for general use. However, it is not specifically formulated to be highly chemical-resistant. Users report good results with sun exposure, but it's advisable to avoid direct contact with gasoline, oil, or strong solvents. For repairs near fuel fills or engine bays, a dedicated marine-grade, solvent-based paint would be more resilient.

Question 4

What's the best technique for applying the pen for a smooth finish?

Accepted Answer

For best results, clean the area thoroughly and let it dry. Shake the pen well and test on a hidden spot first. Apply in thin, controlled layers, allowing each coat to dry completely before adding another. If the tip clogs, a pin can clear it. As mentioned in several YouTube tutorials, using the pen for the scratch and then lightly feathering the edges with a small, fine brush can help blend the repair more effectively.

Question 5

Who is this touch-up pen really best suited for?

Accepted Answer

This pen is a fantastic, convenient tool for the casual boat owner looking to quickly address minor scratches, chips on aluminum pontoons, or dock rash without the hassle of mixing paints. It's a great "first aid" kit item. If you need a professional, fuel-resistant, or perfectly color-matched repair for a large or critical area on your fiberglass boat, you might want to consider a custom marine paint kit.
