Question 1

Can this gauge measure paint on aluminum or just steel?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it works on both. The CM-205FN automatically detects ferrous (steel) and non-ferrous (aluminum, brass) substrates and switches modes. However, some users on Reddit noted the detection can lag on very thick coatings or dirty surfaces. For consistent results, wipe the area clean and hold the probe steady for 2 seconds.

Question 2

How accurate is it really? Is it good enough for checking used cars before buying?

Accepted Answer

The spec says ±(3%+2 μm) — that’s solid for a sub-$100 gauge. Many YouTubers use it to scan for bondo or respray on used cars. Just note it may be jumpy on curved panels (door edges, fenders). Compare multiple spots on the same panel to spot anomalies. TikTok users recommend testing it against a known metal surface first.

Question 3

Does it come with a case and everything needed to start using it right away?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the package includes the gauge, two calibration foils (zero plate + test standards), a pouch, and a battery. The case is basic fabric, not hard shell. Some buyers upgrade to a small Pelican case for workshop use. No separate software or app needed — it’s fully standalone.

Question 4

Will this read through clear coat and paint correctly?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it measures total coating thickness including primer, paint, and clear coat. The sensor reads through non-conductive layers on metal. For plastic or carbon fiber panels (like bumpers), it won’t work — the gauge requires a metal base to produce accurate results. A few owners reported it reads lower on very high-build clear coats (>300 μm), but that’s rare for typical cars.

Question 5

How does it compare to a $40 Amazon no-name gauge? Should I spend more?

Accepted Answer

The CM-205FN is noticeably better than very cheap models — faster reading, auto F/N switching, and calibration foils included. But it’s not in the same class as $300+ pro gauges (ETARI, Bykotest) which offer data logging, better curve compensation, and certified accuracy. For a weekend restorer or car flipper, this is the sweet spot. For daily pro use with insurance-grade reports, invest more.
