Question 1

Is this a complete sourdough starter kit, or just the jars?

Accepted Answer

This is specifically a jar set designed perfectly for sourdough. You receive two high-quality glass jars with glass lids, rubber gaskets, and metal clips—everything you need for a clean, functional setup. However, it does not include a sourdough starter recipe, spatula, or flour. Many TikTok bakers love them because they're the ideal vessel, but you'll provide your own starter and feeding ingredients.

Question 2

How secure is the seal, and is it suitable for actual canning?

Accepted Answer

The jars create a strong seal with the gasket and clips, excellent for storing dry goods, sourdough starters, or refrigerator pickles. However, based on user feedback from seasoned preservers, we recommend them for "fresh-preserving" or storage, not for traditional heat-processed, shelf-stable canning. For that, dedicated mason jar systems are the community-standard for guaranteed food safety.

Question 3

What's the real capacity for an active sourdough starter?

Accepted Answer

The jar holds 0.75 liters (approx. 3 cups). For a sourdough starter, the key is headroom! A very active, bubbly starter can double or triple. Most bakers recommend filling the jar no more than 1/3 to 1/2 full after feeding to prevent overflow. Reddit users frequently praise this jar's straight sides for easily monitoring rise and fall.

Question 4

Are they durable, and what if they arrive damaged?

Accepted Answer

The glass is thick and high-quality, but like all glass, it can be fragile in transit. A small percentage of shipments may experience damage. We ensure all orders are packed securely, but if your jars arrive cracked or broken, please contact our customer service immediately for a hassle-free replacement or refund. We stand by our products.

Question 5

How do these compare to using a regular mason jar?

Accepted Answer

The wide mouth and straight sides make stirring and cleaning much easier than with a tapered mason jar. The glass lid eliminates any concern about metal rusting or plastic interacting with your starter. While a mason jar works, this design is purpose-led for fermentation. The clips and gasket system also allows gas to escape without unsealing the entire lid, a feature many home bakers appreciate.
