Question 1

Can I use this switch to share an external hard drive or SSD between two computers?

Accepted Answer

For most external hard drives, especially portable HDDs that draw power solely from the USB port, this switch will likely *not* provide enough power. Many users on tech forums report drives spinning up and then disconnecting. It works best for low-power devices like keyboards, mice, webcams (that are separately powered), printers, and card readers. For hard drives, you would need to connect an externally powered USB hub to one of the switch's ports.

Question 2

Is it truly plug-and-play, and will it work with my Mac and Windows PC?

Accepted Answer

Yes! This is its most praised feature. The BENFEI switch requires no software or drivers. Just connect the two USB cables to your computers and your peripherals to the switch's four ports. It's compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux. As one Reddit user put it, "It just worked instantly for my work MacBook and gaming PC setup."

Question 3

How reliable is the switching button and the automatic switch feature?

Accepted Answer

The manual button is generally reliable for daily use, though some note it has a light, plastic feel. The auto-switch feature (triggered by moving your mouse to the screen edge) is handy but can be slightly inconsistent depending on your OS and mouse settings. Most long-term users recommend using the manual button for guaranteed switching, treating the auto-switch as a convenient bonus.

Question 4

What are the main limitations I should know about before buying?

Accepted Answer

The key limitations are power delivery and build. 1) It cannot power high-draw USB devices (like most external hard drives) without extra equipment. 2) It does not share monitor/video signals—it's for USB peripherals only. 3) The build is functional and lightweight, not premium. If you need a heavy-duty, powered solution for more demanding gear, a dedicated powered KVM switch might be a better fit.

Question 5

Who is this product ideally suited for?

Accepted Answer

It's perfect for anyone who needs to share basic input devices and low-power peripherals between two computers. Think: remote workers switching between a company laptop and a personal desktop, students with a laptop and a home PC, or developers testing on two systems. It's a simple, affordable solution for keeping a desk tidy and avoiding cable swapping.
